Product research, AI prototypes & practical experiments

Melvin Labs · R&D & prototypes · The Improbability Company

Turn imagination into something you can test.

Melvin Labs helps founders and product teams turn an uncertain idea into something they can test. We use product research, applied AI and working prototypes to answer a specific question before you commit to a larger build.

Who it’s for

Founders and product teams with an idea, or an unresolved product question, that needs to be tried rather than debated.

Melvin Labs is for ideas that aren’t ready to be “real” until you see them alive on screen — the kind of ideas that can’t be explained in a pitch deck, only demonstrated.

From a product question to a useful test

Define what the experiment needs to answer

Start with the user problem and the assumption holding the idea back. We help shape a focused product brief, decide what evidence would be useful and choose the smallest practical test.

Build a prototype you can try

Explore a product workflow, an AI-assisted task or an agent workflow with a working prototype. Product design, software engineering and data specialists help make the idea testable, so your next decision rests on what you observe.

Use the results to choose the next step

Review what worked, what did not and what remains uncertain. We help refine the product direction and scope the next experiment or build. Prototype scope and timing are agreed for each project; an experiment does not guarantee investment or product–market fit.

For ideas that need evidence

Melvin Labs is for founders and product teams who need to test a user journey, explore the usefulness of AI or resolve a product question. We also develop our own products: .volta and the 42 platform for electrification, and the in-form-all workplace evidence showcase.

On the bench right now

Product · Melvin Labs

Operating in Australia · Vietnam launch planned for 2027

.volta · VoltaRocks · 42

Electrification tools that help households explore energy plans, solar, batteries and home upgrades. Vietnam launch planned for 2027.

.volta is the household-facing name. VoltaRocks is the product story, and 42 is the engine for retailers and channel partners behind it.

Product showcase / early access · Melvin Labs

Product showcase / early access

in-form-all

Helping workplace teams request evidence, see what needs attention and review responses. The current showcase explores these workflows for garment factories in Vietnam.

The showcase is currently available to visitors in Vietnam, Chile and the United States.

How an experiment runs

  1. 01QuestionWhat do we need to find out? Write it down before anything gets built.
  2. 02ExperimentThe smallest prototype or test that could answer it.
  3. 03LearnLook at what happened — including the parts that didn’t work.
  4. 04DevelopBuild on what held up, or go back with a better question.

↻ A loop, not a guarantee: an experiment tells you what to do next, not whether the product will succeed.

Ways to collaborate

Melvin Labs is a playful, driven environment built on curiosity and a growth mindset. We partner with people who dare to imagine something different and want a team capable of bringing it to life.

A venture we support

Student-led venture · Supported through TIC–CICT

Lucidex

An early prototype exploring how graduates and employers can verify educational credentials with less manual work. Developed by a student team emerging from the TIC–CICT internship programme.

Lucidex is a student-led venture, not a Melvin Labs product. We support the team through the TIC–CICT internship programme.

Bring us the question you want to test

Tell us who the idea is for, the problem they face and what you need to learn. We will discuss a suitable experiment and agree its scope and price separately from a Tech Forge engineering engagement.

Questions

How is a prototype different from a production platform?

A prototype is built to answer a defined question. A production platform needs a separately agreed scope for reliability, security, integrations and ongoing operations. We review the results of the experiment before deciding what to develop next.

Are .volta and in-form-all available in Vietnam?

.volta operates in Australia, with a Vietnam launch planned for 2027. in-form-all is a product showcase exploring workplace evidence requests and response reviews for garment factories in Vietnam; the showcase is currently available to visitors in Vietnam, Chile and the United States.

Is Lucidex a Melvin Labs product?

No. Lucidex is a student-led venture supported through the TIC–CICT internship programme. Its early prototype explores educational credential verification for graduates and employers.

What is Melvin Labs?

The research and product arm of The Improbability Company — where ideas become prototypes and experiments, and some become products such as .volta and in-form-all.

Is a prototype a promise of investment or product–market fit?

No. A prototype helps you learn what works and decide what to build next. We’ll be clear about what an experiment can and can’t tell you.

What kind of projects does Melvin Labs incubate?

Melvin Labs develops applied AI products, agent workflows and ClimateTech tools. Its products include .volta for households, the 42 engine for retailers and channel partners, and the in-form-all workplace evidence showcase. .volta operates in Australia; its Vietnam launch is planned for 2027.
